RESCUE 8
ON-BOARD GENERATOR REMOUNT
February 28 - After 14
years of being mounted in Rescue 8 improperly, members
removed and mounted it properly. When W.S. Darley
built the rescue in 1994, the generator was mounted
backwards in the compartment. Over the years, this
worked fine. However, in the last few years, we
added a light tower and then last year, added another
light tower. The generator output still has room
to expand, however, it was beginning to overheat as we
increased its load. Thank you to Weller's Dairy
Farm for the use of the garage bay and skid loader.

WOODS FIRE -
WHEATFIELD TOWNSHIP
1967 BRUSH 8
ANSWERS LAST CALL OF DUTY
-- "GOING OUT WITH
A BANG!" --
March 7 - New Bloomfield
Fire Co. was dispatched to 110 Hunkey Hollow Rd, in
Wheatfield Twp. for a brush fire in place of Duncannon
Fire Co. DFC. was committed to another brush fire in
Penn Twp. Engine, Tanker, Brush and Utility 8
responded. Engine 8 arrived on scene to find a 1/2 acre
of woods burning. A 200 ft. line was pulled from Engine
8 and Brush 8 proceeded up a road in the woods and began
working the fire from the far side. Brush and Utility 2
arrived on scene to finish helping with hot spots.
Steve
Kidd, Photographer
The New Bloomfield Fire Co. would
like to thank the Bureau of Forestry for 33 great years
with Brush 8. In 1978, DER supplied the company with a
1967 surplus Jeep for a brush firefighting support
unit. Over the years, the Jeep provided a valuable
service to the community. With safety in mind, the
company took delivery of a 1987 3/4 ton Chevy truck as
a replacement vehicle. Over the past months, the "new"
Brush 8 was painted and equipped for service. During
its transition from a camouflage to red truck that was
equipped with a skid unit, two brush trucks were
utilized as needed, with the ultimate plan of removing
the 1967 Jeep from service when the 1987 Chevy was
complete. The plan was expedited during the brush fire
on March 7. The Jeep was parked on an inclined woods
road, emergency brake set and wheel appropriately
chocked. After a few minutes of being on scene, the
Jeep decided to have an emergency brake failure and as a
result of the soft ground, the Jeep tire sunk the chock
in the ground enough that the wheel flipped the chock
and it started down the road backwards at a steady rate
of speed. After the wheel made a sharp turn to the
right, the brush continued through some brush and small
trees towards a ravine. As the trees hit the door, the
door release button was depressed and the door opened,
resulting heavy door damage. Once the fire was out, the
door was removed from the brush so it could be driven
back home. At the station, members scurried to make the
final modifications to get the 1987 Chevy in service.

Does the face on the right look
familiar? John, left and Jane Doe, right (no relation
to each other and, yes, Jane Doe again.......) Check
out the pictures from the banquet on Feb. 19. Maybe
Jane Doe needs a little more driver training. We
certainly hope that Jane isn't required to drive for
"her" job...
